The four Questions for life.
Here is how it works.
When you feel or think any strong emotions such as sadness, anger, annoyance or anxiousness, write down what you are thinking. So for example, “I’m so dumb”. Then proceed to ask yourself the following questions based on what you wrote down. The key here is to put pen to paper and remember don’t try and do this in your head, as it loses its effectiveness.
Ask the following questions:
1) Is it true?
2) Can you know with a hundred percent certainty that this is true?
3) How do you feel when you believe the thought that you are thinking now?
4) How do you treat other people when you believe these thoughts you have?
5) Who would you be or how would you feel if you didn’t have this thought?
(I know you see five questions here, but number two is just a confirmation of number one.)
Example: I’m so dumb
1) Is it true? - YES
2) Can you know with a hundred percent certainty that this is true?
- YES/NO
3) How do you feel when you believe the thought that you are thinking now?
- It makes me feel useless.
4) How do you treat other people when you believe these thoughts you have?
- I become snappy, irritated, and withdrawn.
5) Who would you be or how would you feel if you didn’t have this thought?
- I would feel happier, relieved, kinder, less anxious.
The next step is what is called the turn around. You flip your statement to the positive side, but be careful not to flip it to the narcissistic side though, which entails becoming self absorbed.
6) Then ask yourself how does thinking this way make you feel? Example, “I am so dumb”, can be switched to “I’m not dumb”. You can then find many reasons why you are not dumb and you will feel better doing it.
The reasoning behind this is to challenge your thoughts. Question whether or not those thoughts and beliefs that we tend to act on are a hundred percent true. It is your right and destiny to question every thought you have, to be your own thought hero. Do not allow negative thoughts to be the absolute truth, letting them dictate your life, never allowing us to question or challenge them. This work helps you to see the real you, to become more self-aware and in turn become more effective in your communication with your family, friends and colleagues.
